Pikorua Double Twist Bone Pendant w Paua Inlay

The Pikorua or double twist design has a meaning of two new fern shoots growing intertwined, this can be interpreted to mean the joining of cultures, love or friendships.

The maori made good use of bone in their everyday lives. It was important mainly due to the fact that it was readily available and also easy to fashion into tools which could be used. The maori made hooks for fishing, weapons and many other tools. Many types of bone were used by the maori, the most used were bones from the Moa, seals, whales and it is said sometimes human bones. Because bone is a porous material it is thought that if you wear bone, some of you passes into the bone and some of the bone passes into you and the pendant becomes a part of you.
